Danube Day in Serbia

Serbia marked Danube Day 2026 with a rich programme spanning local celebrations along the river and a high-level event in Brussels, combining environmental education, sport, culture, festivity and international cooperation.

For the 16th consecutive year, the Public Water Management Company "Vode Vojvodine" organised its popular Regatta, promoting the nautical potential of the region while raising awareness about environmental protection and the connection between people, water and nature. The nine-day journey along the navigable waterways of Vojvodina and the Danube River began in Novi Sad and concluded in Bačka Palanka. A highlight of the event was the Danube Day celebration at Plava Ruža Beach in Apatin, where regatta participants, local residents and visitors gathered for a day filled with live acoustic music, educational workshops for children, and stands showcasing traditional crafts and local products. Children received educational gifts, including ICPDR bags, colouring books and toys, while the evening featured a fire performance, a fireworks display over the Danube, and an Ex-Yu Rock party celebrating friendship, community and the river.

Meanwhile, the Limited Liability Company "Srbijavode" organised a two-day programme in Smederevo as part of the "Play for Water" campaign, promoting this year's Danube Day slogan, "United by the Danube". The programme opened with a riverbank clean-up in cooperation with the City of Smederevo, the Water Management Company "Smederevo" (VPD Smederevo), and the Metallac Sailing Club, with children from the Metallac Sailing Club and the Smederevo Rowing Club joining Srbijavode representatives to clean the Danube's banks. An educational workshop followed, covering water resource protection, waste management, recycling and river ecosystem conservation, alongside a practical demonstration of preparing a sailing boat for departure. On the second day, Srbijavode supported the opening of the traditional sailing regatta organised by the Metallac Sailing Club — marking the club's 80th anniversary — which included a further workshop on Danube conservation. Participants received promotional materials such as T-shirts, reusable water bottles, ICPDR tote bags, drinking water and healthy snacks, and the programme concluded with group photos in a specially prepared Danube Day photo frame.

Danube Day 2026 also had a strong presence on the international stage, with the Mission of the Republic of Serbia to the EU and the Office of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina co-organising a special event in Brussels on 29 June 2026. A panel discussion titled "Danube Day and the 15th Anniversary of the EU Strategy for the Danube Region (EUSDR)" brought together stakeholders to reflect on the Strategy's achievements and future perspectives, while highlighting the economic, environmental and cooperative potential of the Danube River Basin. The panel discussion was followed by a networking reception, providing an opportunity for participants to exchange ideas and strengthen regional cooperation.

Altogether, the celebrations reached approximately 600 attendees at the Danube Day celebration in Apatin, with around 150 people directly involved in the Smederevo activities — including children, coaches, representatives of public institutions, local authorities, sports clubs, volunteers and community members — plus additional participants at the Brussels event. Both local events also reached a wider audience through media and online coverage.

As one representative summarised:

"Danube Day 2026 demonstrated that protecting our rivers begins with educating the youngest generations. By bringing together local communities, public institutions, sports organizations, and international partners under the theme 'United by the Danube', we strengthened environmental awareness and promoted shared responsibility for preserving one of Serbia's most valuable natural resources."
